John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, was a British statesman who succeeded his grandfather as the Earl of Sandwich at the age of ten. His most enduring legacy, however, emerged in 1762 when he revolutionized dining with a simple invention. An avid gambler, Lord Sandwich often refrained from leaving the card table for meals. Consequently, he requested his servants to serve him roast beef tucked between two slices of bread, allowing him to eat with one hand and play cards with the other.
